Andreas von Maltzan is a photography artist whose work intentionally explores the limits of digital photography — using light, digital noise, contrast, and artifacts as expressive tools. The goal was to create a minimal, image-focused portfolio website that preserves the emotional and visual integrity of his work while presenting it professionally to art collectors, curators, and photography enthusiasts.

Challenge

A key challenge was to digitize and display Andreas’ photographs without losing the fragile, deliberate imperfections that define them. Standard optimization workflows often neutralize image noise or blown highlights, but in his case, those are central to the work. The website also needed to present a record of press coverage and past exhibitions in a way that complemented — rather than distracted from — the images.

Solution

A clean, responsive portfolio website was built using the Jigsaw static site generator and designed with a quiet, gallery-like atmosphere. Special care was taken during image preparation to retain the subtle tonalities, noise, and edge artifacts in each photograph. In addition to the portfolio, the site features sections for press coverage and exhibitions, enhancing the artist’s visibility and context without overwhelming the viewing experience.

Minimal, Image-First Design: The layout uses generous white space, neutral backgrounds, and minimal typography to keep the focus on the images. The design mirrors the feeling of a quiet gallery setting.
Sensitive Image Optimization: Images were manually optimized to preserve artistic elements like grain, chromatic shifts, and clipped highlights. No aggressive compression or visual correction was applied.
Static Architecture with Jigsaw: The site was built using the Jigsaw static site generator and delivered via CDN for fast performance and long-term maintainability.
Responsive Layout: The design adapts to all screen sizes while maintaining the integrity and atmosphere of the work, whether viewed on desktop or mobile.
Press & Exhibitions Section: A dedicated section highlights press coverage and past exhibitions, helping contextualize Andreas' work for curators, collectors, and galleries.
Artist-Focused Presentation: The website is free from distractions like e-commerce or overlays, creating a digital environment that respects and supports the artist’s intent.
